FACTORS EXPLAINING THE DEGREE OF ACCEPTANCE OF AN ACADEMIC INFORMATION SYSTEM: A CASE STUDY WITH THE LECTURERS OF A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the factors that explain the degree of acceptance of the Academic Information System used in the teaching staff management support processes at a private undergraduate institution, through the use of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) constructs. A literature review was conducted on Information Systems, Academic Information Systems and the evolution of technology acceptance models. It is a case study, which adopts a quali-quantitative methodological approach and has descriptive and explanatory purposes. Its results contribute to a better understanding of the Information Technology Acceptance process regarding the use of Academic Information Systems in Brazilian private undergraduate institutions, since they refute some UTAUT model premises – mainly the influence of the enabling conditions on the system effective use – in the studied case, suggesting a modified model that might be contemplating the academic context specificities. The work also showed the relevance of the use of triangulation for the understanding of causes of counter-intuitive results or those that contradict assumptions validated in studies conducted in different organizational and environmental contexts.
