Thus, research papers that analyze the use of IT by companies of all sizes, but particularly small and mid-size ones, are important tools to be used as benchmarking of information technology processes and a guideline for decision making concerning the use of IT for management and the operation of such companies. This study has the objective of understanding the issues involved in the use of IT in organizations from the mechanics capital goods sector. A survey was sent to the companies, including questions about the computerization of that industry. The questionnaire was answered by 80 companies, a sample composed mainly of micro and small companies. Among the major results, it was found that such companies use IT in a greater scale for management than for their operation and projects. Among the studied segments, tool machinery was the one that was more thoroughly supported by IT in its activities.
